It's not a distinction I've felt the need to often make, but I think it has an important place in some of these convos when we're talking about that which abides vs. that which appears.
That bolded bit is important to the conversation of 'knowing/not knowing' relative to appearing people and their apparent experiencing.
You cannot know for absolute certain THAT there is conscious awareness on the part of an appearing person/thing, without also knowing "What" they are consciously aware OF.
When I say, all appearances arise within/to that which abides, that which abides = Awareness, as described above as "primordial," that which is the 'common, fundamental matrix of every experience'.
