they went from hating and fearing it to loving and revering it they thought it must mean something.. so it did and thought won, so good and evil mixed in with a lil us vs them were imagined, and every empire was built on that foundation.

oh shit here we go
Hindsight bias: also known as the knew-it-all-along phenomenon or creeping determinism, is the common tendency for people to perceive past events as having been more predictable than they actually were. People often believe, after an event has occurred, that they would have predicted, or perhaps even would have known with a high degree of certainty, what the outcome of the event would have been, before the event occurred. Hindsight bias may cause distortions of our memories of what we knew or believed before an event occurred, and is a significant source of overconfidence regarding our ability to predict the outcomes of future events. Examples of hindsight bias can be seen in the writings of historians describing outcomes of battles, physicians recalling clinical trials, and in judicial systems as individuals attribute responsibility on the basis of the supposed predictability of accidents

Indeed. A Clockwork Orange and Eyes Wide Shut can fuck you up and the opening scene in Full Metal Jacket takes on a whole different understanding after having been there .. and that Gunny was a gentle version of spot on

Alabama recruits so well because they're winners! So much winning! They are elite! And folks like to be in the vicinity of winners!
But losers are always whining, firing people, and rebuilding their program. So recruiting is harder for them. And sometimes the schools that value winning more than anything else will make poor decisions in that pursuit. They might hire a big name coach who's good at talking trash, but who really doesn't understand the x's and o's of the game, and who's brash motivational speeches might win a game or two, but in the end competency matters, and more than likely he'll end up getting fired as well.
You might could say the elites have a formula for success, which the losers would like to emulate, but can't (or won't). As there simply is no substitute for an honest approach of getting things done.
