Yer, if something takes a firm hold of you, there requires a firm self identification . Yup. Agreed. Hehe....yeah, we've got these darned definitions to deal with. I don't either, particularly when one uses their desire to see others happy as the fuel for their action or thoughts towards help or betterment, rather than using their sorrow. [/quote]

yes, exactly. It seems there are several different definitions in play. Depression as I see it, denotes the kind of ongoing, pervasive resistance to life that just would not be compatible with the shift in the way life is seen and experience that follows the realization of Self. Most define it as a permanent shift that does not wax and wane, and that results in the end of suffering. I would equate depression with suffering...as I would any enduring state of emotional discord. Interesting...yes, I can see how that would be the case. I do have reference for the same (shorter periods of time though). Yup. to push against discordant feelings is only going to anchor them deeper....that said, no one imo, is ever gonna 'like' feeling emotional discord. Yes I pretty much agree. So part of what characterizes it is its enduring nature? Yeah...I think so. I don't see a momentary arising of sadness as 'depression,' but rather I see depression more as a 'state' that self perpetuates itself with the feeling/thought cycle.

So, if/when that happens, does the overload of junk food or lack of excercise temporarily obscure the realization of Self...or what? Nothing is obscuring the screen of Consciousness. It's always being overlooked or forgotten about. so....junk food makes it more likely that we will overlook or forget?

I would say if one is depressed, 'life' has become a problem for him. One way to look at depression is as the appearance of thoughts, feelings and perceptions arising "IN" you. Being SR why would anything appearing "IN" you be a problem for life? Thoughts and feelings do not arise absent a particular focus. If depressing thoughts and feelings have taken hold (which Is what I'd say depression is) the focus is mostly upon limitation.....if one has realized Self, how & why is mind gravitating in that direction?

Have you ever looked back at a stage of your life and observed that you were 'depressed' then, even though, at the time it didn't seem like it?

Yes, if you 'identify' with it. But the OP is that the person is SR and depressed. So, as soon as you identify with something you are 'not', then some old conditioning is going to appear, like depression, and you will temporarily overlook or forget SR. It's not a problem for the SR, because it only takes a moment to find your way back to what is being overlooked or forgotten. It's kinda like unplugging the cord of an electric fan. Even though the power has been cut, the fan blade continues to slowly spin, until it eventually stops.

It might be easier to look back and remember the times that you weren't self-identified with something. We fondly refer to those moments as the good times.

If they are SR and depressed then they are most likely suffering from eating too much junk food, and not getting enough exercise. Another factor could be not spending enough time in nature. So, if/when that happens, does the overload of junk food or lack of excercise temporarily obscure the realization of Self...or what? If you were given the greatest machine in the universe, would you give it crappy food, and let it sit around to ossify? If the machine was the means to SR, wouldn't you do your best to take care of it? If people want to eat junk food and sit around, they should at least not feel guilty or depressed about it.(That's how the diet industry makes their billions) I don't...

No. The way I define depression, you'd know it at the time by the fact that there was an all pervasive sense of "life sucking" present. In order to be "depression" the sense of present misery would have to be deep and all pervasive....otherwise, as I see it, we're just talking about relatively normal emotional ups and downs.

I think i get what you mean....would that be like getting caught up in the whole idea that what I am eating is dammned delicious, too bad it's so bad for me, kinda thing?
