Have any of you ever been drawn, or would you consider yourself still drawn, to 'sacred spaces'? If so, what are examples? Temples, churches, monasteries? Places of great natural beauty? Places of ancient history? Or something else entirely?
What if anything makes a sacred space to you?

It's a somewhat shorter growing season around here, so I try not to miss it when everything has been planted. Flowers, vegetable gardens. Pruning flowering bushes, or trees that flower. Mowing grass... there's a reverence in the activities. I don't take it for granted. My wife wants me to construct a place for grape vines in the backyard. Could be a fun project. Sounds lovely

Sounds lovely Well, Patricia really wanted this, but after many years of discussions, we compromised on a small grape vineyard Probably for the best. My impression is that this may have been a little too 19th-century...

There's been all sorts of places that would stop the mind .. it's like the place is the meditation, there's no need for any technique, or even any intention, other than to go there. Some of them have been out in the woods or by water, other's in the cities, some of them gritty, others posh. Of course, in the end, it's just a simple shift of perception to make any space a sacred space .. Father Joe's punchline this past Sunday was "come to see God in everything". But still, for some places, the shift really is the place itself. This is an obscure public park up here:
As the pic shows it sees light use, but it can get even better. This trail is about 150 yards to the left of where that shot was taken, tucked up and away inside the woods in a spot most folks who visit don't notice: Another 100 yards or so down the trail opens up into a small beach that most folks don't know about and that's usually deserted: This was us there today: The wind, the water, the woods .. it all conspires to a stillness-in-motion. My camera's ancient so I had to lose the shot that shows the space in all it's fullness - the far shore of the lake from there is over a mile away. Even when there's boats on the water there's a sort of palpable silence to the place, and I guess that's what makes it sacred. I've quipped to Sue more than once that it's my "other church".

Beautiful. And great photos (esp the one above!!). A stillness-in-motion, a palpable silence... yes, that makes a lot of sense...

Hey, I finally get to see Mutley in person! Sue is super cute. My garden is my sacred space where I do all my mind destroying meditation. Marie and I actually call the park where we do squirrel satsangs a sacred space. I had a Yahoo forum once called 'sacred space'. (Probly still do since old Yahoo forums never die)
