It's odd that you would call the cessation of thought a 'doing,' just as it is also to suggest that that which can only be pointed to, the doer. Yeah, the reason it can be 'done' is that it's an undoing. No supernatural THIS is needed for mind to stop doing what it's doing. It's just conditioning playing out the desire to not think. Yes. Well put.

Does that sound more pleasing to you? Why exactly would you choose to stop thinking? is thought sometimes a problem for you?

Why exactly would you choose to stop thinking? is thought sometimes a problem for you? Why do some people choose to go canoeing? Do they have a problem with dry land?

Well, unless one leaves dry land, he cannot float in a canoe. Similarly, is there some specific experience you are after when you choose to stop thinking?

Similarly, is there some specific experience you are after when you choose to stop thinking? The thought free state of samadhi is devoid of experience and is peace/bliss in its purest state. Why would one not be attracted to it. But that is my natural state even when there is thinking. I was replying to zd. It is more about doing it because I can, not because I feel compelled to stop thinking. But I already know how you will respond to this.

Yes, ZD has made it very clear throughout the years just how proud of himself he is that he can cease thinking at will and that his mind is far more quiet than that of 'most others.' He's turned quietude into a competitive sport and it appeared to me as though you were jumping aboard his team there. yes...no?? I'll say it again; Mind is not the enemy. Thoughts are not problematic so long as they are seen for what they are. Sometimes a conscious choice to become quiet, to focus upon Being, to actively disengage from thought can be conducive to seeing that what I am is the ground to which thought appears. But once that has been clearly seen and there is establishment in/as that ground, there is no longer any reason to actively eschew thought or to favor the absence of thinking over the presence of thought.

A very good question. My suspicion is that is has something to do with a deal he made with someone he loves, but will be interested to see what he says. Attending church and "Catholic mass" at that, post SR, seems to me much like writing letters to Santa Clause, adhering to certain behaviors so you'll get nice stuff at X-mas, all the while claiming that you know Santa is not real. I mean...why?

Actual 'absence' is not a mindful category. Absence of conceptualization, absence of knowing, there's nothing mindful there. Just an absence.
