Yeah I said the exact same thing to my wife as it was going on. Goes to show how NY politics, ain't really politics, 'cause we're a one-party city/state. Otherwise he would have tempered his chops in the Mayoral race, but instead, all you have to do is get the backroom nod for the Dem nomination and it's over. When we'd go out to dinner and they wanted to sell us a bottle from a choice of various fizzled water with Latin-root names I'd always quip, "that's ok, we'll just take the Giuliani". Hehe, ironic you use that example, because that Bloomberg precisely did not win the Dem nod in 2001... which is why he switched parties and ran on the Republican ticket... Ah, yes, I see, that is ironic. During the 5 years I was down there I never bothered to change my address with the DMV or elections. It was an all-in on the rat race to save as much money as possible and get out.
So, that's curious then, did he lose a primary? Think maybe that would have prepared him better ...
And, of course, the phenomenon of Republican NYC Mayors is an interesting anthropological study, in and of itself.

And, of course, the phenomenon of Republican NYC Mayors is an interesting anthropological study, in and of itself. Yes it certainly is. Bloomberg did not run in the Dem primary at all. I think he calculated that he did not then have the connections needed to win it and so he, a lifelong Democrat, ran as a Republican instead and won that primary and then the general...

What I do remember from that time was that Giuliani offered to stay on as Mayor for a time because of the 9/11 chaos, and Mike's reaction to that was as predicable as the offer was outlandish. Probably wouldn't have taken much to sweep aside other Republican contenders in the primary with his checkbook, which explains why he was so unprepared for the other night. I wonder if there was a debate or any debate footage from that race back then.

I hope the results are razor thin, too close to call, just a couple thousand vote difference in a few key states, hanging chads and all...
